Win 2000 Updates don't work

I am working on a computer running on Win 2000 Svc Pk 4

When I try to download updates the "looking for updates" never stops looking
and never finds anything.

I was trying to update Internet Explorer, which came up as an update on my
computer.

Is this a Win 2000 issue? IF NOT what is it?

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Win2K:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327850

Is Automatic Updates enabled?

Is "Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB939653)" listed in Add/Remove
Programs?

Hi PA Bear,

Just got hands on the computer on question again.

I had to disable Auto Updates bcz just ran indefinitely with no find.

Yes, "Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB939653)" is listed in Add/Remove
programs.

If 939653 is installed, IE is fully patched as of 09 Oct-07. If "Security
Update for Windows 2000 (KB941672)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs, the
machine's fully patched as of 13 Nov-07. This tells us that Automatic
Updates (at least) is working.

As for the "hanging" at Windows Update website and the absence of any
errors, first make certain the machine's time, date, and Time Zone are
correct, then test.

If no joy, try *temporarily* disabling the anti-virus and any third-party
firewall and test. (Remember to re-enable the applications!)

If still no joy, try the following fixes, in order (ignore the titles/errors
mentioned) or skip to the end of this post:

1.
http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...=en&IsMu=False

2.
http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...=en&IsMu=False

3.
http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...=en&IsMu=False
(some overlap with #2 above)

4.
http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...=en&IsMu=False

5.
http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...=en&IsMu=False

None of the above can "break" anything.

If STILL no joy...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from
Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no-charge for
support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call,
clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the
update's KB number (e.g., KB931678).

In other countries, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default...r=securityhome > "No-Charge
Support...for virus and other security-related" issues in right-hand menu
for localized contact information.

PA Bear,

Thank you for this very comprehensive action list. I haven't had time to
try them, but will next time I have hands-on this computer.

I appreciate your taking the time to respond to my query,

Jeanne
