Win 2K3 SP1 unable to install updates.

I've searched around the net for a few hours now and nothing I've found
is helping me. I've got vulnerabilities on my server that I cannot fix
due to the update process not behaving.

Here is an excerpt from my WindowsUpdate.log file w/ the relevant
portions. The thing I thought most odd is that WU errors out when
downloading the file, not during the installation.

Because of this I hunted down the individual KBs and found the separate
executables I need to install. These don't install correctly, so I had
them output log files, verbose.

I've tried the "10 steps to make your WU work" article from Microsoft
(start/stop cryptographics, re-register dlls, rename catroot, etc etc
etc etc) but none of it helped out.

Please advise and TAKE NOTE of the steps that I've already done. Since
WU couldn't download the updates from the site I don't really care too
much as I was able to obtain them separately. This server has been
updating fine with all other hotfixes until now.

This error is normally associated with some Program Files (esp Internet
Explorer) having been copied from drive C: to a different location.

Further to my earlier reply, please also check the value of the following
registry key:

Thanks Robin, I adjusted this value temporarily and did the installs
and they worked. I'll change it back when the machine finishes
rebooting. Is there any way that updates can be applied w/ a different
program files directory? I would think that if the path points to the
right PF directory, they should still work (as one would hope the
hotfixes are using the environment variable and not a hard-coded
reference).

I am guessing this error happens because the install was done initially
so the core programs are installed at c:\ and then we adjusted teh
filesystem and changed the program files directory that future programs
are installed to. Therefore the core windows files that are located in
the PF dir on the C drive can't be updated using the Environment
variable and taht's causing the error.

At the very least maybe in the future the error messages could be a
little more descriptive (ie: "could not find path XXX")
