Win Update Alert - OK - Disappears til later

XP SP3 --- More than not Windows' Auto-Update Alert symbol appears in my
System Tray, I clk OK to DnLoad, and then the Alert disappears til a later
time - often when I've pursued Updates manually - which then conflicts with
the original Update effort that seems to reappear.

Is this common and / or is their a fix for this? Thanks!

It's common and no fix has been made available that I know of. Having
patience is the only thing that works. I'm waiting on the yellow shield
to reappear as I type this ;-)

Thank you. It's easier to live with something if you know there's no fix for
various quirks.

You could use the ReportingEvents.log to see what
has downloaded. I think you can even use it to detect
what is still downloading; otherwise you would use the
WindowsUpdate.log. If updates are actively downloading
or suspended, use bitsadmin to see what is going on.
Unfortunately too many services use the same svchost.exe
to get a better idea of exactly which service is active,
otherwise you could also use Task Manager for clues.
In any case, the icon you are looking at is shown by
wuauclt.exe

You can always go to the Windows Update site and download the updates. No
sense in putting off the security updates.

Thanks. Didn't know about ReportingEvents.log but found the (3) Updates
listed as Ready to Install. It said an Administrator should log on and
Windows would advise what to do next,. The Wait for Instructions is the
Issue: the Yellow Shield has to come back to Install and hasn't so far - even
after a Reboot. If I were to start MANUAL Install of downloaded Updates the
Shield Returns and screws up the Manual Install - so I'll wait.

There's one good reason not to go to the Windows Update and that is that
there is spyware waiting for you there in the form of WGA.

Absent any serious numerical Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be
seeing a delay caused by excessive demand on the servers ("Update is not
allowed to download due to regulation"). It can take up to 7 days or more
(sometimes much more) for all Automatic Update users to get new updates.

You can try downloading/installing the updates via Windows/Microsoft Update
(WinXP) or running Windows Update manually (Vista) instead: Understand that
by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates users further back in
the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why Automatic Updates hasn't
brought them in for you yet).
