I have been working on this Win Update problem for a while
now. I've had several problems and I am making progress.
Now I get as far as choosing an update to install but when
I press install a window pops up that states "Windows
Update is now downloading and Installing update". It shows
my update (1 of 1) in a smaller field within the window as
downloading. It just sits there though. No progress at
all. 0mb out of 50mb. I eventually have to end it using
task manager. I'm on Win XP SP2 (I had to order the CD
because WU is broke). I also have Norton Internet Security
but I added the new V5 WU sites into the Trusted sites and
I did the same in IE. This all seemed to start when V5 of
WU appeared after a critical update. Any clues would be
greatly appreciated. Joe

Hi

Please try the following:

1)
Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try WU site again.

2)
If it still doesn't work, see if this one helps:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site,
you see the 0x800A01AD error while looking for updates
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=13&ln=en

3)
If it still doesn't work, see if this one helps:

Go to
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.

4)
If the above didn't work, you can remove (or rename) the
Softwaredistribution folder and see if it helps.

Follow step 2 here to do this:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en
