Win. Update stops at "Checking for the latest version of..."

When I go to Windows Update, I see the "Checking for the latest version of
the Windows Update software..." screen, however the browser never proceeds
past this point.

My security settings are default, I've added Windows Update to my "Trusted
Sites" list, I've disabled my firewall (Trend Micro Internet Security), and
I've deleted my Internet Files cache - but still it never gets past that
screen. I'm running Win XP Home with SP2 installed.

Please help!

This error may occur if the WUAUSERV and BITS services are not configured
properly in
the registry.

Try registering the following:

Click Start, select Run and type (pressing enter after each one and wait for
the
success message):

net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

"first internet explorer then windowsupdate if no progress click tools
internet options green x contols set at medium moveslider control as low as
it will go
close refresh page windowsupdate should now be working DO NOT FORGET TO
RESET WHEN DONE chuck3
