Win updates again....

Hi all,

I have recently turned on auto updates to the extent of notifying me of them
b4 download or install them.
It gave me a list of a bunch of updates for my xp sp2, it offered sp3 which
i declined but i accepted the other 20 or so. Since then the update shield
comes up in the task bar downloading but always dissapears, leading me to
assume the downloader keeps crashing. But no error codes

So i tried full auto updates, same problem, looks as tho its downloading but
then dissapears outta site.

So i tried manually updating, i get re-directed to MSN hompage.
I cant seem to download anything from any MS sites. I am suprised my IE7
accesses this site without re-directing me.

Iv tried registering wup2.dll / wups.dll but it made no difference, I have
panda 2009 firewall and anti virus/spyware etc.

Can anyone help? Thanks

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Adobe and Windows don't auto-update the same way.

You are being redirected (i.e., from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to
www.msn.com. All of this behavior is caused by a hijackware infection.

That wild goose chase should keep you busy for a while. When there is no
explanation or understanding you will always get that pasted reply. Half
those links are either outdated or outright spam.

Good luck.

They all look perfectly good to me. Would you care to expand on which ones
you consider "outdated" and "spam"?

Poooleeze.........I spent hours going through that clump of crap that is
mostly common procedures to keep a clean System. "If all else fails post
your Highjack This results.........." Whahaha.......it would be quicker to
do a clean install. More problems are caused by Windows Update failures.
There is the malware mentioned.

That pasted response was handed to me for a totally unrelated problem on a
different group and I stand by my claim. If the fix is unknown then why does
anyone send someone off like that. That response could be handed to anyone
for any problem on any group. Just tell everyone to come back when you are
sure you have a clean System fully updated which completes a circle. People
would be better off spending time reading about all the failures of Windows
Updates itself. I put together clean new systems that have never been online
or downloaded anything and had troubles with Windows updates like many
mentioned here. If you simply don't have an answer then don't reply. Simple
as that.

So in fact there is NOTHING there that is "outdated" or "spam".

Tell me you have been to those sites and seen no spam. Tell me there is
anything new offered. Tell me Windows Updates itself blameless. People come
to these groups because of those failures. Not for diversions that would
take months to review. MOST problems with Windows update are NOT due to
information provided. Deal with it.

There are a few known issues with Windows Update, none of which produce the
symptoms the OP described. In almost all cases, symptoms like those of the OP
are due to malware.

The OP said: "I cant seem to download anything from any MS sites."

Would you care to explain how you think Windows Update is to blame for this one?

Harry.
