Going crazy,
Just installed an OEM disk of XP home on a new PC just built. I go into
updates and get error 0x800a01b6. I send MS my problem and they have me
register some active X files but I still get the message. jscript, msxml3,
atl, wuapi, wuaueng, wuaueng1, wucltui, wups, and wuweb (all dll files)

I don't have any other softward loaded and the XP home firewall is off. Can
anyone tell me what they think? And btw, Auto updates service and Background
intelligenttransfer services are all on and appear to be working. I've even
allowed all the windowsupdates to be trusted in my internet options folder.

Help is appreciated.

Hi;

Have you installed Service Pack 2 yet? If not, I recommend you download
and install that package first. If you don't already have it handy on a
CD, then you can download it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then manually download and install the below (they are later than SP2),
being sure to install them in the order listed --- double check that SP2
is completely installed and all Restarts are done before starting this
series.

VBScript update:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

WinHTTP & BITS 2.0 Update:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

MS Installer 3.1 (v2): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

MSXML 3.0 SP5:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Be sure to Restart any time you are prompted to do so.

Last, check your Hosts file to verify that it doesn't contain any static
IP addresses for the Windows Update or MS sites. Then Restart one more
time into Safe Mode, delete the entire SoftwareDistribution folder in
the Windows directory, then Restart back into Normal mode. Then follow
this link to enter the new MU/WU site to ensure that the necessary
ActiveX controls get updated. Click the "Go to Microsoft Update"
button.

To SkyKing:

Not sophisticated enough to know about checking my host files, or starting
in safe mode etc.

sorry to ask again but can you give me some steps to take?

Hi King,

I noticed that my XP cd says "includes SP2" but I downloaded it as you
suggested. I did everything you suggested w/exception of the verifying the
host.

Still no dice. Any ideas? Should I just reinstall? and try again. FYI...
I reinstalled last night before posting.

The Hosts file is located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.
You can open it with Notepad.

To start in Safe Mode, turn Off your computer. Count slowly to 15 then
power back on. Press and hold the F8 function key (release if the
keyboard starts to beep). You will see a Boot Menu; select the Safe
Mode one by pressing the corresponding number.

You are still getting the same 0x800A01B6 error when you visit the
Microsoft Update site? That's very unusual after doing all the items I
previously listed, and if you did a Repair install. If you did not boot
into Safe Mode, how did you remove the SoftwareDistribution folder?

Check your Windows\System32 folder for these files:
iuengine.dll
mucltui.dll
muweb.dll
wuapi.dll
wuauclt.exe
wuauclt1.exe
wuaucpl.cpl
wuaueng.dll
wuaueng1.dll
wucltui.dll
wups.dll
wups2.dll
wuweb.dll

What is the version number for each of them? You can find the version
number by right-clicking each one, selecting Properties from the right
mouse menu, then click the Version tab. I'm especially interested in
any that are not version 5.8.0.2469.

Dear Sky King, I did everything you suggested. My HOSTS file has one IP
address entry next to localhost and nothing else. I went into safe mode,
deleted Software Distribution from C:\WINDOWS folder (although I do have this
folder in my System32 folder that I didn't touch, but appeared to have more
or less files). When I clicked on your link to enter the new MU/WU site to
update ActiveX controls I was re-directed to Windows Update site that didn't
have a "Go to Microsoft Update" button, just a "continue" button. When I
clicked it, I got the same 0x800A01B6 error. I did check my Windows\System32
folder for the files to check and all were there except for mucltui.dll &
muweb.dll, which were MISSING. I have genuine MS products, & have had
problems with having to go thru alternate validation process. I installed the
files you asked to check and installed each digital certificate (not that I
know if that would help). Every file is a version 5.8.0.2469 built by:
lab01_n(wmbla). The file wups.dll was also in my also in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SoftwareDistribution\Setup\Ser viceStartup\wups.dll\5.8.0.2469
folder. The file wuaucpl.cpl also had another file named wuaucpl.cpl.manifest
which opens with unknown app per the properties menu. I sure would like to
get this resolved. Sometime last year my computer got a virus and I had to go
through the whole Windows XP re-installation process. Every since, my
computer has not been the same. I had the most difficult time just trying to
get it to see Office 2000 so that I can get the updates for my software. I
sure would like to get this resolved. CAN YOU HELP ME. There was no further
threads after you asked if the files were in the system32 folder.

Thx ahead of time for your help. LJYOCOM

Hi;

Sounds like you have done quite a bit trying to fix this already. One
thing you don't mention is what firewall you are using and what
antivirus software you have installed. Sometimes one or both of those
can be an issue for this error.

Please give the steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;836948 a try,
especially if you have a 3rd party firewall installed. If you are using
the Windows XP firewall, I'd recommend you try the steps related to your
antivirus software first.

Hi "Sky",
Thank you for responding. I have disabled all the 3 firewalls, Norton
Internity & Anti-Virus Security, & MS Anti-Virus with no avail. I did,
however & in the meantime, receive some MS email support that I'm now trying
to follow. If these instructions correct my problem, I will let you know that
all is well again. I really look forward to getting this issue resolved as
some of my applications are also hindered from receiving updates.
