Win XP home SP2 - automatic update service stays disabled no matterwhat I do -

I know there are a lot of posts on this already - and I've tried all
the suggestions on the Microsoft site -

I reinstalled Windows Update, re-registered the files it says you
shoud re-register, its enabled in my hardware profile,(which seems to
be the common answer, but that doesn't help)

Its just frustrating since it wrked fine until yesterday when I
installed a few updates from Microsoft and McAfee had a small update
it auto loaded. Then the trouble started.

I just ran a complete virus scan and it found nothing - Spyhunter and
Spybot found a few trojans that I deleted and fixed, but it's still
staying disabled.

I'm on a XP home edition so I have no policy editor or anything to
check if its disabled someplace else,

I'm still searching as it seems a lot of people seem to have this
problem, but none of the common solutions I tried works.

Are you 100% sure that the system has been cleaned of malware ?
Please visit a reputable anti-malware forum so you can determine if this
is the case. If malware is still resident then it will continue to
disable or interfere with the updating process in order to 'protect' itself.

I ran Hijack This and there wasn't anything there that I didn't know
what it was.

I've tried the Dial-a-Fix program that was mentioned in this group -
didn't work, I've tried manually fixing registry entries according to
MS and other tech web sites - nothing
I've unistalled Update, reinstalled, rebooted over and over and still
get the same 1058 Error when I go to start it. Then it imedialtey goes
back to being disabled.

I used to keep the updates turned off mostly anyway - it just really,
really bothers me about this though. The fact can't I can't solve it
no matter what I try.

ERROR 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or
because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

for post #2) I tried that simple hardware profile change - and that
is NOT the problem. Its enabled just fine. I even disabled it, saved
and then enabled in case it was stuck. That didn't work.

for post #8) Tried all that as well - all the registry entries seems
there, I did everything it said and it still wont work.

(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

I popped off an email to the MS support site to see what they have to
say. I will try the Hijack.

I'm experiencing the same problem.

Windows XP SP2

I used Spy Sweeper, Windows Defender, Ad-Ware, Hijack this, SmithfraudFix,
cleaned Run entries in registry and ran automatic update fix using the inf.

I also get fling.com website when I launch IE.

I going to wipe the OS and re-do the entire laptop

The list of things I have gone through to resolve virus/malware/trojan/virii
what ever special word you wana use LOL

disabled system restore
HiJackThis with castlecops but three (vundo)

insequence I ran (in safemode)
ath-cleaner
ccleaner
malwarebytes
symantec antivirus
SUPERAntiSpyware

booted in normal mode
online to live care online virus cleaner
Stopzilla
malwarebytes
AVGas
atf-cleaner
ccleaner
HiJackThis

Virii all gone but I can now do updates surf without issue (not my computer
.... hehe I know better then to use progs like LimeWire, Kazza, bearshare and
all that other virus riden junk) The issue is that I have run services.msc
and start automatic updates everytime I reboot the computer
