Win XP Security Update locks IE7

I have downloaded and installed the security update for WinXP. Now IE7 won't
run. I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" or "Internet
Explorer could not open the search page" error messages and "Diagnose
Connection Problems" button does not function. Anyone else having this
problem? What's the fix?

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from
Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the
following:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, all Norton Add-ons (if any), any
real-time protection provided by an anti-spyware application (except for
Windows Defender; includes Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS
guard.exe, etc.), disable any third-party firewall AND THEN enable the
Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus
application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free firewall, you
may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB958215)"
via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right)
and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates
offered (i.e., KB956390). If a Root Certificates update is listed in the
Optional Updates category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's
enhanced security.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable (or reinstall) your
third-party firewall.

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB123456).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue
(which is 47830).

Have had the same problem on two client computers. Manually deleted I
security update and this solved the problem. But it reinstall
automatically on next start-up, and cannot be hidden.

One possible work-around until MS fixes this is to remove the updat
manually in Add/Remove Programs - you need to make sure the 'Sho
Updates' box is checked, then remove the last two updates for Window
Internet Explorer. Then disable automatic updates

Not an ideal solution. I left automatic updates on, but installe
Chrome for my clients. Not an ideal solution either, but by now MS mus
know this is a problem, and yet it the faulty update still install
automatically

I am all in favour of users taking responsibility for maintaining thei
own systems, but expecting users to be able to run through the proces
suggested in the KB is ridiculous - especially when the update denie
them internet access, and therefore acess to the KB (even assuming hom
users know how to use it)
If there is a known problem with the update, why on earth doesn't M
just fix, and remove it from updates until it is fixed
If they don't/won't, then they can hardly blame people for moving t
another browser
I am an MS partner, but this kind of thing really gives me the irrits

[Feel better now? I've installed KB958215 on several machines without any
problems (then again, a Norton application's NEVER been installed on any of
the machines) and I'd venture to say that most other users didn't have any
problems either. If there was a problem with this update, you'd see a
helluva lot more posts in this newsgroup about it, believe me!

If you're an MS Partner, you've got more-direct access to a much better
level of tech support than 99.99% of the users posting here do.

Sorry PA Bear. Finger faster than brain. I contacted the MS support line and
am now up and running. They told me it was a Norton problem, and since
running Live Update before re-installing 958215 seems to have resolved the
issue, I guess they're right. Just seems to me MS would want to pre-test
security updates with major security software providers. Your reply was
extremely helpful and easy to follow. Nice to find someone whose main
interest is in getting people's problems fixed. I really appreciate the
prompt and knowledgeable response.

Well folks, I can go even better. Not only since Friday when my automatic
update polluted my computer, not only is my explorer horribly slow, freezing
and disconnecting at will, but it doesn't appear in my 'Change or Remove
programs' section. Also, according to that zone, my internet explorer is
"used occassionally" and hasn't been activated since 28/10/2008 despite being
used daily.
I do use Norton, but can't remove and re-add when the update is hiding. As
this is only 1 of 5 updates downloaded at the same time - I can't be sure
which of the 5 definitely went haywire!
Help, in simple English, please
