Win XP SP3 - Patched Through August 2009 Update Question

I've updated the my XP SP3 OS through the August 2009 updates but now I
notice that I cannot get my Windows Update icon - on my Start menu bar - to
direct me to the MS Update website.

Also, when I go to Start / Set Program Access & Defaults / Add or Remove
Programs / Windows Update nothing happens as well.

Can someone direct me to the path I should be pointing my Windows Update
icon to?

Right now the Target is

%systemroot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe

Thanks

IE version? Can you access the page via IE Tools | Windows Update? ...if
you click on http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com?

Is Automatic Updates enabled?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Thanks for posting.

I got it to work. Only because I compared a work PC to my Laptop.

After selecting Update and right clicking Properties
For some reason, the Start In folder was changed.

I mimicked my work PC's settings of %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% and that seems to
have done the trick.

Still unsure why it was changed to begin with.

Regards,

YW & thanks for your feedback.

What was the Start In path before you changed it?

The system path was as follows:

%windir%

Again, not sure why it was changed but I do know I had difficulty using the
icon for MS Update after the August 2009 updates.

My AntiVirus software is Windows Live OneCare (no Norton or McAfee products)

I also use System Mechanic by iolo for regular maintenance.

Any ideas on why the change?

Regards,

Your injudicious use of Registry cleaners, most likely. If you think your
Registry needs to be "cleaned" or "repaired," read
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions.

NB: The above applies to OneCare's "Registry cleaner," too!

Thanks alot for the link.

Too bad I thought I was doing my PC a favor by using OneCare and System
Mechanic.

I bought into the marketing without knowing the potential side effects.

Oh well,
