I have win2000 server runing on an IBM AS400. I am in a small office with
about 20 users running WinXP. What is the easist and cheapest way to update
my WinXP machines using the 2000 server to push all the newest Windows
updates.

Assuming you are running an AD domain the cheapest solution would be to
install WSUS on your server and setup a group policy to have the clients
download the updates from that server. WSUS and the SQL Desktop Edition that
is uses are both free. You will also need IIS, which is also free.

Im not running active directory. Is there any other easy free way of pushing
out the update, without setting up active directory?

Hi,

You can use a WSUS server even if you don't have Active Directory. You
just need to set some registry values on the clients, using e.g. a
registry file or a script.

To obtain the correct registry values to deploy:

I suggest you use gpedit.msc on a WinXP SP2 computer to configure the
Automatic Updates settings policy, and after having done that, you can
export the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate
(including the sub-key named AU) to a registry file, or use some
other method to deploy those setting to your clients).

Those registry values are also documented in the WSUS deployment
guide:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...fdb68ceb3.mspx

And a fyi:

Please post WSUS related issues to the newsgroup dedicated to WSUS:
microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services

(the microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs newsgroup is for SUS)

WebNews link to the WSUS newsgroup:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...pdate_services

Or use a newsgroup reader (default Outlook Express) to access this new
group:

Clicking on this link should open this group in OE:

Well, actually, the free way is still WSUS. You'll just have to suffer
through the extra pain of not having Active Directory to assist you with the
'easy' part of the deployment.
