My C-Media sound device on my motherboard quit being available as a
"preferred sound playback device" under the audio tab of Sounds and
Multimedia Properties. It appeared to happen after my computer crashed just
after a Windows Update. It now only shows Modem "0" Line Playack. Device
Manager states that the sound card is working fine with no conflicts.

I have tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling it. Even unistalled
it and turned it off in the bios, then turned it back on and reinstalled it.
Tried downloading new drivers from C-Media and the Motherbaord manufacturer.
Nothing seems to work.... Even reloaded Windows.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I seem to be having the same problem with winXP. under the audio tab it just
shows Modem "0" line playback. when trying to play anything from media player
it says that we need to install a sound card, which IS installed with no
conflicks.
the computer itself makes all the regular sounds as far "dings &
whistles"...I am
kind of at a stand still at what to do also....thanks!! pennie
