win2k: Error number: 0x80244024

running win2k sp4, ie 6.0.2800.1106. this machine was recently (last week)
updated from nt4 to win2k. initially had very little free space on C, fixed
that today with partition magic (in other words, we may have run out of drive
space, as it was down to <100M at one point).

when i attempt to do windows update, i get this after clicking "custom" or
"express":

[Error number: 0x80244024]

trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

automatic updates are enabled and appear to be working. owner normally
uses firefox as browser, i am of course using ie to run update.

i have tried going through some knowledge base stuff about windows update
problems (making sure security settings are ok, activex enabled, etc).

HALP!

problem solved. old AdSubtract adware remover was acting as a proxy (and
turning on "internet options/connection/lan settings/use proxy"), which broke
windows update.
