Win2k server updates

I have a Win2k server that keeps repeatedly pulling down 2 updates; KB891861
(SP4 Security Rollout) and KB823353 (update to Outlook Express) (both are
updates from July, I've installed the August updates without incident) .
Each time I try it will give a message for successful installation, but I
don't see them in control panel or the registry. Within seconds the balloon
in the corner will pop up requesting the same updates, WSUS will list them as
still needed, and the windows update site will list them as successfully
installed in update history, but will also still list them as required.

Troubleshooting steps so far: Cleared out internet cache, wutemp folder,
softwaredistribution folder, and have re-registered all wu .dll files. I
notice there is no program files/windows update/v4 folder for some reason.
According to the windowsupdate.log, they install successfully without errors
but there are 2 warnings:

2005-09-09 13:34:33 1340 aa0 Agent WARNING: Failed to evaluate Installed
rule, updateId = {ED300F67-421C-4C08-B3BA-F35C55F3B427}.100, error =
0x80041017

and further down..

2005-09-09 13:53:30 1340 398 DtaStor WARNING: Update Service: Failed to
update backup store

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

- Jaime

From: "Dave Hawley" <>
Subject: Re: Windows 2000 SP4 Update Rollup "Sticking"

Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsupdate

In the thread in the link above Dave Hawley mentioned that the problem
seemed to be caused by

<quote>
....two components of Windows were out of date.
These were MS Data Access Components 2.8,
which needed to be upgraded to SP1, and MSXML 4.0,
which needed to be upgraded to SP2.
</quote>

He found this from running MBSA 1.2.1

There are specific version checker programs for both components:

If you have the security update KB897715 (MS05-030) installed,
it could be caused by that.

Temporarily uninstall KB897715 (from Add/Remove Programs), and see if
KB823353 (MS04-018) installs successfully. Then install KB897715 again.

More info/workarounds here as well:

Ok, updating MDAC did get rid of the prompts for the SP4 rollout. But I
still don't see it listed in control panel or in the registry
(HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/UPDATES/WINDOWS 2000/SP5). Is there a better
definitive way to tell if an update is actually installed?

Hi,

You should see it listed as "Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4"
in Add/Remove Programs.

Also, you should see the registry value "Installed" set to 1 under
the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
\HotFix\Update Rollup 1\
