I had a hard drive crash and replaced the hard drive and re-installed Windows
2000 SP4 and Office 2003 SP2 from scratch (using the same CD’s and licenses
as before, my earlier build di not have any of these issues.)

All systems seem to function well. However I am having the following issue
the most important is #1. #2 may or may not be related.

NUMBER 1.
=======
Windows update will not work and returns the following error: (using IE 6)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Error number: 0x80072F8F]

Your computer’s date and time appear to be out of sync with an update
certificate. To fix this:

1. In the Control Panel, open date and Time Properties
2. Ensure that the date and time are correct.

Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problems (error number
0x80072F8F) yourself.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I clicked the link and followed all of the resolution options and then some
with other articles found with a google search. Since then I have made sure
there is not spyware or viruses that I could detect with Ad-Aware SE SpyBot
1.4 CA’s Pest Patrol and Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security with the
firewall enabled.

After going through the resolutions, I uninstalled and re-installed Win2K
SP4, IE6 SP1. I have verified the BIOS and OS Time, Date and Time Zones are
set correctly. I even re-set them to be sure. I have also made sure there
are not applications loaded and running and I do not see any unusual
processes running. None of this helped whatsoever.

Sometimes now I also get the following message as well. Other times I get
the above.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Error number: 0x8024402F]

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NUMBER 2.
=======

Office 2003 With and Without SP2 when I open outlook I am prompted to enter
in the serial number. Doing so does not keep this prompt from re-occurring.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Office and selected “Run All From My
Computer”.

I am not sure if this is a related to the above Windows Update issue or if
they are both as a result of the same other issue, or unrelated entirely.
Office started to do this before the hard drive crash but I attributed it to
an unstable installation as a result of the hard drive bad blocks. Now I
have no idea.

That so much - this really FRUSTRATING!

You cannot view updates on the Windows Update site using secure socket layer

Error number: 0x8024402F

If you have a Wireless Router:-
In the security tab, make sure you aren't blocking AcitveX.

Don't know about the problem with Office.

Thanks for the reply but I have seen and tried ALL of the suggested setting
changes in these articles. As I mentioned below, the Data & time in both the
OS and BIOS are correct. I have re-registered all the .dll files and then
some. I have made sure that SSL 2.0 & 3.0 are checked and removed the check
box for the "check the server certificate revocation (requires restart). ALL
with no luck change.

Perhaps my reply was a bit hasty. There are a few things in the second
article I did not do. Oops! I will do them and post the results.

Windows 2000 Pro SP 4 Machine
Settings Verified:

As Per Article 326253 I have made sure the following settings are correct
but still have the issue.

Time & Date Are Correct
SSL 2.0 & 3.0 Are Selected
Trusted Root Certification Authorities Valid from 1/10/1997 to 12/31/2020.
NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED - This certificate has expired in the Certificate
Status box.
My ISP Does not use Proxy Settings set to Automatic Detection -tried checked
and unchecked and internet works either way.
Languages Set to English (correct)
Use HTTP 1.1 and the Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections Checked

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing SP4, IE 6
I have updated the Windows Installer
I have re-registered the following files:
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
qmgr.dll
qmgrprxy.dll
MSXML3.DLL
SOFTPUB.DLL
INITPKI.DLL
MSSIP32.DLL
URLMON.DLL
WINTRUST.DLL

Added the following sites as trusted sites:
http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com

I have disabled my firewall
Scanned and cleaned all spyware with Ad-Aware, SpyBot and Pest Patrol
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
Deleted ALL %Temp%, System Temp and User Temp User Cookies & Temp Internet
files, Cleared Recycle Bin

Short of rebuilding the machine from scratch, which I am not sure would
work, I have no idea what to do next. Is there a place where we can manually
download all the patches that would bring the machine current and then see if
that would fix this issue?

You can download them from the Catalog and save to be installed later.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you
want, Click the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the location
where you want the updates saved to and then Click the "Download Now" button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.
