Last several attempts at Windows Update on Dell laptops with legal COAs fail
with error 0x8dd0009. This is after SP4 is applied. Very frustrating. I
know it's old but it is what they were delivered with and works great.
Anybody know what's up here?

Windows Update for Windows 2000 is a lousy piece of work. Any
success at obtaining the Windows 2000 updates via the Microsoft
Download Center? It's manual labor but less frustrating.

Hi Pete - This has been showing up a lot recently and most of the guidance
offered doesn't seem to help much, but the following has worked, especially
for some Win2k systems.

Try the following:

1. Close ALL instances of IE/OE/and Windows Explorer.
2. In Control Panel, open Internet Options.
3. Clear the TIF to include Off-line Content
4. Clear History
5. On the Advanced Tab, UNcheck "Clear third party browser extenstions"
6. Reboot, then reboot again (Yes, twice! ), and then retry Update
(Windows or Microsoft, whichever you're using.)

If It now works, then one of your BHO's is likely the problem. One known
culprit for this error is McAfee's version of Site Advisor. If you have it
installed, uninstall the McAfee Site Advisor (you may have two installed,
one under McAfee and one under Site Advisor, BTW) and then RE-check "Clear
third party browser extenstions", and then see if Update still works. If
not, then you'll just have to try disabling your BHO's one at a time to find
the problem guy. Try BHO Cop (from PC Mag if you happen to have this) or
BHODemon2, http://www.definitivesolutions.com/.

Please post back with your results.

I will do this on the next one and post how it goes. It's a shame MS hasn't
stepped up to the plate and fixed this. I donate Dell laptops to charity and
most, if not all come with Win2K. I'm not about to buy XP for all of them
but I want them to be as up to date as possible for the next user as they
will likely not have access to broadband or even be in the USA. For now
I've stopped installing SP4 but sense I am missing some security updates.

Thanks for the input Jim!
