I just successfully installed the latest 2 critical security updates for
win98se and upon rebooting and loading the windows update page again, the
option to scan for updates is no longer there...it is replaced by a welcome
page for administrators only. If I reload the page, I can see the "scan for
updates" page for a fraction of a second before it is replaced by the welcome
page.
How can I get the "scan for updates" page back???

Administrator Only - Windows 98/ME/XP/Server 2003
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updt9xad.htm

Windows 98/ME
Click Start, Log Off (username)
When Windows restarts and the logon box appears, enter "Administrator" (without the quotes), and
don't enter a password, just leave the box blank and click "OK".

so far the only solution I found was to un-install the 896688 critical
update...that solved the problem...the other solutions mentioned here...the
registry keys dont exist in win98se.......I also tried running msconfig and
unchecking everything except systray and zonealarm( zonealarm has never
caused any problems with critical updates) and rebooting and then
re-installing the critical update with no other programs running in the
background...rebooting and the same problem re-appeared again, so programs
running in the background were not the cause of the problem...I am going to
leave the critical update 896688 installed for the time being until someone
comes up with a better solution

Is there an alias for this server name?
My DNS doesn't have a lookup for it.

Hello Dennis I have had exactly the same problem and until stumbling across
your Question had been tearing my hair out for 3 days. I also had problems
with my ms icons on the desktop ie briefcase/ documents etc in that when
clicked on they did not show any details when in the web page format. I
worked on similar lines to you but I went finaly to my oldest Registry
Back-up and restored that via the DOS prompt rechecked the system files via
System File Checker and then rebooted. At last I now seem to be back to
normal fingers crossed
