When I want to update my Win98SE the sytem answers "Only for system
administrators" and the update process ended. It is quite funy because
i want to do it from home, and there is no other network.
I checked the registry as microsoft adviced, but there is no
Explorer entry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\

Can somebody help me?

Thank you in advanced

This is caused by a bug in MS05-052 (896688). See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909889 for the fix.

NB: In Step 2, Win98 users must change the first line from

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

to

Regedit4

You can download the fix from MVP Ottmar Freudenberger's page:
http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip (and you must make the first
line change in it, too, before proceding).

Ehm, I'm no MVP at the moment, just to not confuse anyone.

Bye,

Nope, the included REG file is REGEDIT4 and has ever been.

Thanks for the clarification. (I thought it was 'Windows Registry Editor
Version 5.00').

You /were/ an MVP and chose not to accept the award for 2005. To us, you're
still an MVP.

Thank you your advice. But sorry it does not work. I checked these entries in
the
registry and it already have these entries with the correct values. Besides
I tried
to add the file to the registry but the system (registry editor) answers:

"Importing OLE_fix.reg is not possibile: The given file is not sytem
descriptor command file. You can import only system descriptor command file."

in hungarian language, because I use hungarian version of Win98SE.

Somebody can give another idea?

I found a solution after Saincase from Win98 update discassion and now it works
I copy hes suggestion:

I've tried everything I've read on these boards.

Unregistered iuctl.dll, deleted iuengine.dll, iuctl.dll, changed and deleted
the NoWindowsUpdate registry keys, added login account named "Administrator"
to my Win98 SE machine, deleted all internet history and cache, deleted the
Program Files\Windows Update files, even went back and deleted the V4 folder,
checked the registry edits for the CLSID key.

No luck. Every time I go to Windows Update it tells me I have to be an
administrator. This is a joke for Windows 98 systems.

I think that I'll have to wipe and reinstall the operating system ... or buy
new hardware and Win XP Pro. sigh.

Is there something I'm overlooking still? I've spent hours trying to resolve
this very annoying problem.
