win98se update

my computer was updated with all the suggested security and win98 updtes last
october--after doing so i realized i lost my troubleshooting guide--did
nothing about it--now i am having problems with my sound and need to get some
answers as to why it quits after a little while, but the trouble shooter
doesn't work--only brings up a blank white page--any suggestions how to get
it back?

i don't know what happened to your trouble shooting guide
but in general you should only apply windows *secutity* updates.

if you "updated" your sound card drivers...that might have actually caused
the problem...
if you still have the mfg's drivers that were originally installed (in other
words, the ones that worked)
see if you can uninstall your sound card...reboot...then reinstall the
original drivers

Yes, there was a security update that broke it. A kill bit was set on that
ActiveX control. It only effected 98s. I had a link to help with that but
can't find it just now. Post on the '98 group - everyone is familiar with
it, and will help you right away.
