That is a feature of WinXP.
I opened Help and Support in XP; typed "unreadmail" and got this:
Overview of the mail notification display on the Windows XP Welcome
screen

See other options under "unreadmail-notification" on this page:

| Hello,
|
| I have a question concerning the "integration" between Windows Live
| messenger and Win XP.
|
| I use Windows Live Messenger, on my Win XP login page, I see a message
next
| to my user profile image saying: "30 unread mail messages".
|
| Now, maybe some users like this or maybe MS thought it's a nice
feature, but
| I don't like to divulge such info to all users on my PC.
|
| The bad part is that this appears even if I am not signed in in Live
| Messenger.
|
| I want to disable this un-necessary and in my opinion, rogue behaviour
from
| a software revealing info that I don't want to share with others,
since to
| use my software, I have to be signed in on Windows and the reason to
have
| different user logins is to allow users to have their own PRIVATE
working
| environment.
|
| Revealing my mail messages outside my private user environment is a
clear
| ISSUE to me.
|
| Please make this go away.
|
| MS still does not understand that people use DISTINCT software for
DISTINCT
| purposes...
|
| An OS is an OS... A browser is a browser... an IM software is an IM
| software...
| PLEASE STOP MAKING THE OS GOING OVERBOARD AND TRESSPASSING ONTO THE
BROWSER
| AND IM APP...
|
| I certainly dont want my OS to be AFFECTED by my IM app.
|
|
| Thanks.
