Windoows XP - desktop icon changes

I have an application I install that has a generic icon compiled in it. I
deliver a desktop link file that associates say AA.icon with the application.
After the install the icon is fine on the desktop.

When I boot the system, the icon is fine. But after awhile of doing things
on the computer, the icon will change to the generic icon that was compiled
into my executable. If I boot again, all is fine.

Has anyone run into this? Does service pack 2 fix this
