Liv

Is the 'Windows Update' service set to automatic start.
It's not only for Windows Updates, so make sure it's started.
Start>services.msc>enter, accept UAC, check to make sure
that your services in anything named WINDOW is or needs to
be started.
Hope this helps.

What is the history of this system and these errors? Did it ever work? If
so what changed between when it did and now? Is this an installation of
Vista on an older computer? If so is it a clean install or upgrade? Or is
this a new computer with Vista preinstalled by the OEM?

What software does this happen with. What are the full and exact error
messages. How are they displayed and when? I'm sure one of them says more
than "I can't access".

What have you read and what have you tried?

I've got the same problem, as do many other people, judging by the number of
requests for help on the web. I've tried every solution I've found but to no
avail. What are these error numbers for if Microsoft don't offer any help.
They have an article on the subject, but it is for pre-Vista OSs and none of
their suggestions work.

So this is an appeal for anyone out there who has a fix for this problem to
post it asap. Don't bother with fixes that involve: 1 viruses, 2 replacing
various msi*.* files, 3 checking the Registry, 4 checking the Services are
automatic and started or 5 un-registering and re-registering the msi file.
None of these 'fixes' work for me nor for many other people.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can fix this - as Microsoft don't seem to
care about it and it renders the OS useless if one can't install any programs!

Have to agree with Mikeh. My system supplier cannot get any help from
Microsoft on this issue so what chance do we mere mortals have.
I too have tried all the work rounds as posted but none work.
It seems to me that this is a system bug and Microsoft should be aware of it
but how does one get into their system to report it. I tried and all I got
was a request for a Pin I.D before I could send a message. How do you get one
unless you can contact them. (Catch22).I hope someone out there is a "brain
box" and will come up with a solution before I go mad.

Kevin, have you had a reply from Microsoft yet? There are thousands of us out
here who are desperate for an answer to this problem. If you get a fix that
works, then please post it here.

Try the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

The download link is near the bottom of the page.
