window update no reboot error

everyday I log in and nothing happens (the welcome screen just keeps
displaying) so I end up having to log in via safe mode and doing a system
restore back to a date that works (29 Nov) prior to various windows updates -
has anyone else had this problem? HELP!!

No updates were released between 29 November and today (07 Dec-09).

UPDATE: Have since had one of the IT guys at work look at my laptop and he's
baffled too ... suggested I switch of any unused programs in start up,
uninstall any unused programs and generally do some housekeeping (backup and
remove docs, defrag, etc.) and install all of the important and recommended
updates in the hope that it will work!

Have done all that and it still 'hangs' on the welcome screen - I can bypass
it by using CTRL+ALT+DEL and opening the task manager, and have to say my
laptop is running quicker now but it's infuriating that it gets stuck on the
welcome screen (it's not stalling because the icon still spins round so it's
trying to log in!!).

Any suggestions as I don't want him to wipe the laptop and reinstall
everything if I can help it!!
