Windows Update has stopped working for some reason. I get an 80070002 errror
code but have worked through the steps necessary to resolve it many times
(clean boot, etc.) without success. I have 32 bit Windows Home Premium and
everything else appears to be working with the exception that prior to this
occurring, when Windows Update was working, I could not install IE8 which I
don't use much anyway. So far nothing has helped. I have SP2 installed
according to System Information.
This on an HP Pavilion w/3Gigs RAM.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed SP2?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Hi PA Bear, I have Online Armor Free Firewall running alongside Avira
Antivirus, and SuperAntiSypware Pro; they were *all* running when SP2 was
installed. The computer was also attatched to a backup drive at the time
which I a have heard can cause problems (I don't understand why it would
though). Norton (NIS) was pre-installed when I purchased the machine but I
removed it with the removal tool and went through a list of steps to insure
that it was totally gone. I received help with this at Wilder's Security
Forum (some time ago).

Can I re-install SP2 with a clean boot (msconfig - disabling all Startup and
and Services hiding Microsoft stuff)? Or, do I have to somehow delete SP2?
Really worried about this one.

I tried the Windows Update Readiness Tool for Vista 32 bit and, strangely
enough, it said that it didn't apply to my system (because I have SP2
installed perhaps). I got the message "This update does not apply to your
system."

The rename.bat maneuver also failed to get Windows Update working in spite
of it sounding so promising.

This from System Info:
OS Name Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium
Version 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002
Other OS Description Not Available
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard

System Type X86-based PC

The strange thing is that everything else seems to be working perfectly. :-(

If you suspect that installing SP2 caused the behavior:

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of
chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...4&gprid=582034 &
select appropriate category (e.g., Installation).

If you suspect that installing SP2 has nothing to do with the behavior:

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
the ability to install security updates.
