Is Windows doing maintenance on the upgrade sites? My little shield has been
sitting in my system tray all day trying to download any updates.

Tried logging on the update sites with the following results:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...=en-us&muopt=6

Error number: 0x800C0002
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view.

So is there a widespread problem with updates ATM? The update site you
refer to is not working for me/on my machine.

I've been having problems with Windows 2000 SP4 on my laptop all day -
I've not previously had any problems with update itself. I am currently
getting an error code with both Windows Update and Microsoft Update.
With Microsoft Update I get: Start Now..Continue.."Files required to
use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your
computer. To continue: Register or reinstall(default).. or Let me
read..." (I've been through this loop several times). Continue (with
default) [this step appears to complete as the registrations runs to
100%] but then I get the error page with error 0x8007041D "The website
has encountered a problem and connot display the page....."

Following some digging around in the NG's and elsewhere I have found
that I can not start the COM + service or the Automatic Updates service
(either from the services applet or from the cmd console).

"net start wuauserv" results in the response:
"The auto updates could not be started..a system errro has
occured..system error 518..the systerm cannot find the message text for
message number 0x206 in the message file for BASE".

Starting it from services results in an error dlg that says:
"Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer. Error
2147746310. An unexpected internal error was detected".

Trying to start the COM+ service in services gives me:
"Could not start the COM + Event System service on Local Computer.
Error 1053. The service did not respond to the start or control request
in a timely fashion."

I also tried Dial-a-fix-2006-06-27.exe that tries to re-register a
number of DLL's associated with WU. This hasn't resolved the problem. I
tried these various changes once I had stopped both AVG anti-virus and
Zone Alarm. I have also added the various windows update site to the
trusted zone in IE (which I have made my default browser although I
normally use Firefox with the IE extension).

Anyone have any other suggestions?
Is there a problem, with the updates site?

Steve

And Windows Update sure needs a doctor, I timed the scanning for updates on
my computer and the green bar kept going and going during almost 20 minutes
before show the available updates!

Now that sure is a lot of time and is not my connection since I have a Cable
Modem.

I saw what I expected to see in the microsoft.public.windowsupdate
group - lots of problems - I didn't expect to see lots of appreciative
feedback about this wonderful component :-)

Someone has suggested that due to the numbers of those updating, the system
is clogged?
Don't forget, there are in addition, SP1 and SP updates being done - they
have 50 -70 updates to add to their machines. Plus there those trying to do
the Black Tuesday updates.
What a mess - what a farce this monthly ritual has become.
The hardest hit seem to be those with servers.

Steve
I think all are too pre-occupied with their respective probs to rant/rave
yet.
But what about the tech helpers - my hat goes off to them - what a terrific
job they are doing, sorting out MS cockups.
I left it for two weeks on the last lot, before downloading - still got one
cause pain.
At the moment I am collating results :-o

It would just be nice to see something from Microsoft about what they are
doing to resolve the problem.

I'm left wondering how many non-techie users are currently unprotected due
to their automatic updates not working for who knows how long.
