window update takes too long (failed?)

I logged off my XP home yesterday night and allowed automatic update. Now
after about 8 hrs, it is still doing the update, says it is at the 2 of 5
steps. My computer is a dell desktop, has about 800MB disk space left.

I don't know what to do, please help!
