Window Updates download but don't install.

Hi,

I am having trouble with Windows Update on my laptop. The problem started
several months ago when the laptop apparently downloaded an update. A
shutdown screen came up asking me not to turn-off the laptop because the
update was "installing". However, after a long period of time (like a
half-hour), nothing had changed. I figured there was an error, so the laptop
was manually turned off.

When I go to the Windows Update web site and select the "custom" install
button, it lists several patches (the last of which is "KB905414"). The next
screen indicates that all the patches have been downloaded so I select the
"Install Updates" button. The result is a screen with "Updates were unable
to be successfully installed." with a list of the patches. When I look at my
install history the last install was in August, which is a not right. The
laptop is set to auto-install updates..

It appears that the updates download but do not install. What am I to do now?

Actually the current setting for automatic update is set to "Notify me but
don't automatically download or install them." and I recently installed
Norton Internet Security 2005.

XPsp2? Have you tried WU with Norton disabled?

I am having the same problem as Jeff. I have tried the installs with Norton
disabled. It does not seem to make a difference.

Same problem here. With XP SP2 on an IBM Thinkpad.

I started the machine in "safe mode" with only MS services running and the
installation ran through.
I don't know what the problem is or if it is solved.

I have just verified that it does not have anything to do with the Norton
Internet Security package.
Previously I have had no problems installing these security packages.
