the window wont shut down

when i click to shut down my labtop
it wont shut up
it says window is shutting down
but i leave it like that for 10 min and wont shut down

any suggestion?

How have you configured the 'power options' (in control panel)?
Also, after clicking the start orb to choose shutdown...are you
clicking on the button that looks like shutdown or on the arrow, then
clicking 'shutdown'?
