window xp will not update anytime or even serch for updates

i just got dsl i have been using cable and i tried to update windows and it
gives me this message : Windows Update cannot continue because a required
service application is disabled.... with the error code :
[Error number: 0x8DDD0018] i check what it says to set and it was already
set like the said. can someone please help me thanks james
