I have an existing AD Domain and I need to update the two main Domain
Controllers that are running Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 2. In
what order should I apply the service pack...?

Main Domain Controller and DNS machine first then reboot and apply to the
second Domain Controller...? Any guidelines...?

Thanks for the information.

It shouldn't really matter, but make sure you select the option to archive
your roll-back data when you install. Just in case.

That's correct, but after you do that be prepared for many more
udpates after SP4. The Post SP4 Rollup will reduce the number, but
there are still several you'll need and you won't be able to apply
them all at once, you'll have to reboot several times.

There have been some sporadic reports of problems with the Post SP4
Rollup but we've deployed it dozens of times with no problems.

Sincerely,
Brian S. Bergin

True, the first SP4 rollup had some major issues. I believe they
re-released it in the last few weeks...this time with fixes instead of
breaks

Hi,

No, it is not re-released yet, but hopefully it will be soon. The
updates that will be included in the new version is documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861

The only change that have been done so far, is that July 18, 2005
Microsoft removed the express install option to avoid an issue
with msxml3.dll becoming a 0 byte file in some cases.

An exerpt about this issue from the KB article in the link above:

<quote>
Note

You could only perform an express install of Update Rollup 1 for
Windows 2000 SP4 before July 18 by using the new Microsoft Update
Web site or by using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This
problem does not occur unless you manually upgrade to Microsoft
Update from Windows Update version 4 or by using Software Update
Services (SUS) 1.0.

We have addressed this issue by making a minor change to the way
that this update rollup is published on Windows Update. No files
were changed to fix this problem.
