I install Windows 2000 Professional. Then I install SP4 & IE 6 SP1
(offline installation).
Then I got to the Windows Update Site... I install the "New Update
Software", and select Custom install and sit at the "Checking for the
Latest Updates for you Computer" screen for ~ 1 hour, before failing
with a 0x8DDD0009 error. I have googled the error and tried a few
things w/o success. I just did another clean install w/o success.

Any ideas ? Since this is a little annoying.

Thanks.

IMHO, the Windows Update site does not respond to Windows
2000 too well. The other option is to do the update manually.
Start by going to the Microsoft Download Center and get the
Windows 2000 post-SP4 roll-up file. And then download the
newer hotfixes and security updates from September 2005 and
forward.

Not exactly the response I was looking for. I am sure it has to do
with the BITS & Genuine Advantage tool. But I have no way of
confirming that. Just a footnote that the svchost.exe goes wild
consuming all my CPU time during the waiting process.

Thanks for any other suggestions.

Hi Robin - This has been showing up a lot recently and most of the guidance
offered doesn't seem to help much, but the following has worked, especially
for some Win2k systems.

Try the following:

1. Close ALL instances of IE/OE/and Windows Explorer.
2. In Control Panel, open Internet Options.
3. Clear the TIF to include Off-line Content
4. Clear History
5. On the Advanced Tab, UNcheck "Clear third party browser extenstions"
6. Reboot, then reboot again (Yes, twice! ), and then retry Update
(Windows or Microsoft, whichever you're using.)

If It now works, then one of your BHO's is likely the problem. One known
culprit for this error is McAfee's version of Site Advisor. If you have it
installed, uninstall the McAfee Site Advisor (you may have two installed,
one under McAfee and one under Site Advisor, BTW) and then RE-check "Clear
third party browser extenstions", and then see if Update still works. If
not, then you'll just have to try disabling your BHO's one at a time to find
the problem guy. Try BHO Cop (from PC Mag if you happen to have this) or
BHODemon2, http://www.definitivesolutions.com/.

Please post back with your results.
