Thanks for the information. But why was it necessary to
repeat WGA validation when an already valid number exists?
One would think that Microsoft would at least be able to
insert the WGA validation as a certificate somewhere in
an already-verified system, with all of the security it is
attempting to impose against piracy, fraud, etc.

Dunno. I hadda do the same thing to get the Sept-05 version of Malicious
Software Removal Tool. Server problems?

And a new WGA-related ActiveX control was installed (IOW the older one
wasn't reinstalled).

We /think/ so, yes (It could be worded better...), but I'd only do so if I
was experiencing the bugs described in the KB article I cited.
