windows 2000 update - failure to reach desktop after service pack

I just downloaded a service pack update on my windows 2000 professional and
when my computer went through the restart operation it got such in a
repetitive scan disc operation. It never gets to open the desktop, it just
reenters the same scan disc function. Any ideas what I did wrong or how to
fix this?
