Heather.. it's *posted* in the Update Metadata contained in your own WSUS
Server!
There are two editions of KB931836... (released 8/28/2007)
one for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 systems, and
one for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 systems.
*BOTH* have been superseded by
"Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB933360)" (released 8/28/2007)
which was then superceded by
"Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB942763)" (released 12/11/2007)
which was then superceded by
"Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB951072) (released 8/12/2008)"
KB951072 is the current update.

The keywords here are =BEEN REPLACED=.
And the KB article *IS* the "official posting" of that fact.

Because this one, along with KB951072 are the only current, active, updates
you need to be worried about.

When an update is superceded by a new update, only the *new* update needs to
be installed.
I'm not sure where you were "told that the presence of [the new one] doesn't
mean [the old one] is not needed", but that's rarely the case.
Of course, it's an irrelevant point if the update is no longer available via
the distribution channels!
