Okay I have spent like two days on and off trying to figure this out and I am
just going to have to ask Microsoft themself now (or whoever else posts). I
have Windows Server 2003 and also we have SUS 3.0. I cannot get update
931836 installed. I see that 914961 which is self described as Service Pack
2 is already there. I know that I am seeing that previous versions/updates
can make 931836 fail but don't see if for 914961 specifically. Should I
uninstall the 914961 and if I do what will I lose (needed updates?) and if
that isn't the fix I am also reading that 931836 is only for XP and won't
work (maybe) on 2003 even though microsoft says its for 2003. If anyone
knows what to do about this I would greatly appreciate any hints you can give
me.

Heather

OK, first point: update 931836 is out of date. You should probably be
installing 951072 instead.

No. Reverting to a previous service pack is not the best way to solve this
problem. There is no reason that 931836 shouldn't install over service pack 2.

No, KB931836 applies to both XP and Windows 2003. Of course they are two
different downloads.

First you'll need to tell us what method you were using to try to install the
update and what went wrong, although as I said before, you probably don't really
want this particular update anyway.

Harry.

I guess since the update is out of date (which I have read elsewhere) I will
just not install it. I had been doing a command called auforceupdates to get
the updates to install. Other servers successfully installed it.

Thank you very much for your help! I don't need anymore help since I am
just going to not install it.

Is this posted on microsoft's site or something? Our admin is nervous about
me declining it without some sort of official statement somewhere from
Microsoft saying its not needed. I guess I understand his caution. I can't
find anything anywhere on this site saying it isn't needed. Just that it has
been replaced by this KB article or that, none of which are in my SUS
interface or already on the server. The servers just have 914961 Windows
Server 2003 service pack 2. I am told that the presence of that one doesn't
mean this one is not needed. Like one is the base service pack and one is an
update or something.

Heather.. it's *posted* in the Update Metadata contained in your own WSUS
Server!

There are two editions of KB931836... (released 8/28/2007)
one for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 systems, and
one for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 systems.

*BOTH* have been superseded by
"Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB933360)" (released 8/28/2007)
which was then superceded by
"Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB942763)" (released 12/11/2007)
which was then superceded by
"Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB951072) (released 8/12/2008)"

KB951072 is the current update.

The keywords here are =BEEN REPLACED=.

And the KB article *IS* the "official posting" of that fact.

> The servers just have 914961 Windows Server 2003 service pack 2.

Because this one, along with KB951072 are the only current, active, updates
you need to be worried about.

When an update is superceded by a new update, only the *new* update needs to
be installed.

I'm not sure where you were "told that the presence of [the new one] doesn't
mean [the old one] is not needed", but that's rarely the case.

Of course, it's an irrelevant point if the update is no longer available via
the distribution channels!

Is the WSUS server reporting that this update is needed on the server in
question? Have you approved the latest update, 951072?

Harry.

Make sure you install the latest version instead.

Harry.
