ok after having no luck with getting a windows server
2003 working on VPC 5.2 I upgraded to VPC2004 in hope
that would solve the problem.

At the end of installation (each and every time I have
attempted it) I am given a message saying that the
Virtual Machine Network services driver failed to install
and that I should run INSTALL.BAT after rebooting, I do
that every time but still only get the local, none and
NAT options in the network settings !! when I need the
physical emulation option ( virtual switch )

I get the following message when I first open VPC2004:

" Virtual PC could not open the Virtual Machine Network
Services driver. "

then it says that access to external networks will be
unavailable then:

" to fix this problem, re-enable the Virtual Machine
Network Services driver on one or more ethernet adapters
or reinstall Virtual PC "

after MANY attempts of reinstalling the software, as well
as re-enabling Virtual Machine Network Services driver
(by using the REMOVE.BAT and INSTALL.BAT in the Utility
folder) I am still getting no luck and still getting
above message each time I run VPC2004 and still only have
3 options on the first network adapter (being local, none
and the shared NAT options)

I am running VPC on windows XP pro, my NIC is a " Realtek
RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC " and is working
fine

I would really appreciate any help as this is getting
frustrating especially since the reason I am using VPC is
to test windows server 2003 across the local network !!

thanks in advance for your help

Hesham

Try re-installing VPC. Do any other guests work?

make sure that you're not running terminal services, that will prevent
VPC from installing correctly.

Thanks for the reply

Yes I have already tried re-installing VPC many times,
the problem arises before actually installing any guests,
as described in original post, the network settings are
limited to only 3 that dont include the NIC emulation (
virtual switch) option, and the message that the "Virtual
Machine Network Services driver" wasnt installed properly
pops up as soon as VPC is run !!

Yeah, I get the same thing.
Reinstallations or whatever or running install.bat
or hacking the batch file to force it to register the
network drivers have no effect so don't
waste any more time on it.

When I go ahead and try to install win2003 or win xp
as virtual machines, the installation will randomly lock my entire pc. hit
reset.

After 7 attempts to get each working
I've had enough.

Virtual PC is a good idea gone bad.
It's clear that it just will not work with certain hardware configurations.
My pc is winxp pro

hardware:

athlonxp 1700
1 gb ddr 2100 ran
radeon 8500 video
network card is attached to a cable modem
for broadband.

and yes I've tried the network plugged into the modem,
unplugged, firewall on and off, norton av on and off.
same result.

There are no error logs for any of this, the help
file is a joke and the support is trivial.

Get the idea?

I'm going back to vmware. No problems with any of this in vmware.

Hey, how about testing VPC with real world hardware?
Or having better support before you release a clearly flawed product?

Thanks for the reply

OK I am not running any terminal services, I even tried
re-enabling the virtual network drives (REMOVE.BAT then
INSTALL.BAT from Utility folder)with windows in
diagonstic startup with no services loaded at all !!

it appears I am not alone either (see reply to my
original post by Mr. Kevin Condor)

Is there anything else that can be tried? as I am
seriously disappointed with Virtual PC 2004 and now
thinking of going with vmware

thanks for your help

Try installing the Loopback adapter
(http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q236/8/69.ASP) and see if
that helps, if not then try, once again, re-installing VPC and see if it
does the proper configuring

Try installing the Loopback adapter
(http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q236/8/69.ASP) and see if
that helps. Not sure about the PC-freezing though

Wow, your one experience and VPC is junk. You don't mention the NIC,
do you have VM Ware Workstation already installed? Have you updated
your NICs drivers?
