Windows 2003 servers get stuck in shutdown/reboot after auto-windows update.
When i go to the physical console and move the mouse, miraculously it
finishes shutting down and comes up normally.

This sucks. How can i fix this without having to touch the mouse?! I can't
remote in. And i want it to reboot without any intervention by me anyway.

Try asking in a more relevant newsgroup.
Cross-posting to a Windows Server newgroup for convenience.

Good luck

I have seen this a few times.

Do you have your server set to not show the Control+ALT+Delete screen via
Group Policy?

I take it this is happening consistently, i.e., every time? I've experienced
similar symptoms very infrequently, and we've seen reports of it happening
consistently but have never been able to tie a cause down.

The usual suspects are anti-virus and similar third-party software (including
device drivers). Do all of your machines have some particular piece of software
- apart from Windows! - in common?

Harry.

This is happening on virtual servers? That's a new (and potentially helpful) twist.

Are you able to create a new virtual server for test purposes? If you can get
it to happen without any third-party software or device drivers, that would be
very revealing.

Harry.

I have seen there not showing the Control+ALT+Delete screen will cause the
system to wait for a console touch before it will finish booting. Try
disabling the policy on a few servers and test. I am pretty sure you will
get the result you want. Don’t ask me why.
