Windows 2003 server upgrade gives BSOD

I have Dell 4600 that was running Windows 2000 server with Nvida display
driver.

So, I try to upgrade it to Windows 2003 server and I got BSOD in the middle
of upgrade. The message is 'Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area'. This is what I have
done so far

1) Boot up using BartPC to do a checkdisk on harddrive.
2) Replace existing 512MB with 2G RAM.

So far, none of the above resolves this problem; when it boot up, it tries
to continue with the upgrade but again gives BSOD with
'Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area'. Now, the kicker is the system is in a noman's
land. i.e I cannot go back to 2000 as it is in the middle of upgrade and I am
not in 2003 either.

Prior to the upgrade, I run the 2003 compatibility check and it did complain
about a CD-ROM driver (Roxio) and fax services. I did uninstall all the
software that uses Roxio. As for the fax services, I was never able to
uninstall and I just continue with the upgrade.

I can either 1) revert back to Win2000 server or 2) try to see if I can fix
it move forward to Win2003.

Suggestion? Thanks

Are there any devices plugged in to the machine? USB, printers, etc? Can you disconnect the CDROM? How did you upgrade, from the CDROM or copied/pasted the i386 to a folder on C: drive? Did you use an SP2 integrated copy of Windows 2003? Did you try to disable the Fax services first?

Also curious, why not just install a fresh copy of Windows 2003 on another server and migrate the data? Fresh installs are always preferred due to issues such as this, and to give you a fresh OS.

Is this a DC?

No device plugged in; no usb and no printer. I did the upgrade from CD
ROM. Yes, I use the sp2 integrated copy of windows 2003. I am not using the
fax services so I have use the admin tools to disable it.

This is not a DC.

This is my 'sandbox' PC but I do have data in it that I would like to
preserve and hence the upgrade.

Just try the following:

1) Remove the modem card in it ...NOT using at all.
2) Remove the nvida video card and use the built-in on board video.

And try to reboot to continue, no go with BSOD.

0x0000007F(0x0000000D, .......)
ox00000050(0xBA842000,0x0000000,0x80838050,0x00000 0000)

Is there a easier way to revert back to win2000 other than doing a fresh
install?

The modem card and extra video card falls under 'devices' plugged in, whether using them or not. Unnecessary services also can cause it, if there's a local firewall installed set to start automatically can cause a 0x0000007F error with upgades, as well as not disabling an AV app running in the background.

What type of apps are installed on this machine? Do they autostart with Windows or have an associated Service that autostarts?

I guess at this point it won't even allow you to go into safe mode. If you can, disabled unecessary services other than Microsoft services.

Try re-running the upgrade again with EVERYTHING unplugged.
