I'm trying to install Windows 2008 but get the following error immediately
after entering the product key:

"Windows installation has encountered an error and needs to be restarted"

The version I am trying to install is an MSDN download.

What about if you do not enter a key? Leave it blank and click on Next.

Hello Keith,
Augusto has the correct solution.
MSDN is shipping Volume License media for Windows Server 2008, You should
not enter a product key during setup, after setup completes you should
choose to change the product key to insert your product key.
If you attempt to enter the product key with volume license media you will
get that error message.
Volume License media already has a generic license embedded in it, that
helps determine the which edition gets installed.
Since the volume license keys apply to multiple editions in most case,
setup cannot determine which edition it is supposed to install when you
attempt to enter the product key during setup.
Thanks,

Thank you Augusto & Darrell.

That's what I thought. When I bypass entering the product key, I'm prompted
to select the Windows edition. I presume that Windows Version = Windows 2008
Standard, Windows Longhorn Server = Windows 2008 Enterprise, Windows
Longhorn Server Core = Windows 2008 Data Center.
