Windows 2008 x64 updates fail to download

I have a Windows 2008 x64 Enterprise server running 4 virtuals. The update
settings for this box are download only. First problem is that it doesn't do
that. Second problem is that when you tell it to install, it just sits there
saying 'Downloading 9 updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)' forever. I then went
into the detail and manually downloaded the needed updates and when you go to
install them one by one, the Windows update standalone installer pops up and
starts searching for updates without end. The only way to get out of it is to
kill the process. It looks like MS has fixed updates so they can only be
applied exactly one way now and all paths lead to that venue. Anyone else
having the same issue? More importantly, anyone resolved it?

The Windows Update catalog is corrupt

Stop the automatic update & BITS services, rename your software distribution
folder in Windows then restart the services & try again
