Windows 7 (7600) with xbox 360 connected via VGA cable display issues

There are a number of posts online relating to issues switching resolutions
when using an xbox 360 connected to a HD TV using the VGA connector. I have
Windows 7 build 7600, the latest Microsoft xbox 360 upgrades and a 100Mb
connection between my PC and the xbox. My desktop is running 1680x1050 and
my Xbox at 1920x1080 via the VGA cable.

When connected to Media Center, the menu is distorted into two strips and my
TV reports that the resolution has been switched to 640x480. If I downscale
the resolution of my xbox I get a correct display. This is not what I want
to do every time I try to use MC.

Has anybody else seen this issue or have a recommendation on how to resolve
it without having to change the resolution on either my PC or the xbox 360?

Are you sure that your TV will accept 1920x1080 over VGA? Check your TV
user's manual. Many HDTVs will not accept non standard PC resolutions such
as 1080p over VGA and some will not accept higher then 1024x768 over VGA.

Hi,

I can confirm that the resolution used is 1920x1080 via the VGA cable (and
looks great on the screen), is in wide screen and reports the VGA cable via
the display options screen. In this resolution, Media Center does not work.
If I set the resolution on the xbox to 1680x1050, then the Dashboard screen
does not look good and only fills the centre portion of the screen, but
Media Center works. My desktop is also set to 1680x1050.

Your 1680x1050 desktop is not being upscaled to your 1920x1080 output
resolution. Some drivers have scaling options and if yours do then you want
to be sure that scaling is not disabled.
What happens if you set your xbox dashboard, your desktop and the MC
internal resolution settings to 1920x1080
I don't have an XBOX so I don't understand why if you have 1080p HDTV you
would not want your desktop and applications not to be set to 1920x1080.
What is the actual make/model number of the TV.

I decided to set the resolution of the xbox to 1680x1050 (60htz), seems to
over come the issue.

Has anyone found a way other than lowering the display resoloution to overcome this issue?. I am running 1920x1080 on my PC and the same through a VGA cable and it looks great on games but as Ian said when I load the Media Center it goes into two strips which are distorted.
