Hello everyone

I have a Dell E6500 Laptop with an NVidia Quatro 160M graphics card. The
laptop is connected to an advanced docking station with an HP w22 and L1906
monitors plugged in. For the last 8 months of having the laptop I have had
this setup working. Yesterday at 12:00 pm the L1906 monitor (display 2)
stopped displaying.

The only thing software related that has been installed was Windows Update
KB978207 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7. I
see this update in the Update History report, but I cannot find it in
Programs to remove it. I tried doing a system restore back to yesterday at
10:00 am and that did not work.

I have put a different E6500 laptop on the docking station and it works
fine. I have uninstalled the NVidia drivers from my laptop and downloaded and
installed the latest from the NVidia website. I have downloaded the latest
monitor drivers for both displays. I have tried a different L1906 from our
inventory and it has the same issue.

I am pretty confident this is not a hardware problem, but some setting in
the OS that is causing this issue.

Any ideas on where I can look would be greatly appreciated.

Were you running Win7 eight months ago?

Are you (still) running Win7 RC or...?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

=====================================

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB978207).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE
(e.g., KB978207), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the
Consumer IE7 queue (which is 47830).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through

In Windows XP the add/remove programs dialog has a checkbox to "Show Updates".
If Windows 7 has that checkbox available you should be able to find the update
listed. It is for me in XP, the last one listed under "Windows Internet
Explorer 8 - Software Updates". You should be able to remove it unless System
Restore removed the uninstall information.

Also, check the logs of any security software. One may have deleted or
quarantined a file from the video driver and might also immediately do it again
to the newly installed driver. Unlikely, but I have experienced exactly those
actions from SuperAntiSpyware, it _twice_ deleted the entire thunderbird3
Program Files directory.
