All updates or a specific one ?
When did this issue start to occur ?

Click the Start orb > type the following in the Search field
windowsupdate.log

Under Programs, click on windowsupdate.log
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the log for the most recent entries.

Copy and paste at least the last 50 or so lines of the log into your
reply, please.

Try to include the Version of the WU client that's installed.

EX:

2010-01-27 11:12:43:833 952 d04 Service ** START ** Service: Service
startup
2010-01-27 11:12:43:833 952 d04 Service *********
2010-01-27 11:12:44:567 952 d04 Agent * WU client version 7.4.7600.226

What you are looking for, besides the WU client Version, are FATAL or
WARNING error codes:

8024AFFF WU_E_AU_UNEXPECTED
An Automatic Updates error not covered by another WU_E_AU * code

0xC004F050 The software licensing service reported that the product key
is invalid

*** Was the system upgraded to Win 7 or did it come with it already
installed ? ***

The 0xC004F050 error is most often associated with Volume License
Activation, not standalone systems.

The Version of the WU client is one version behind and should be updated
to the current one. However, it should still be able to search for,
download, and install updates which do not require Validation.
In other words, *Security* updates.

See if the system can install this update from the MS Download Center.
*Save* the update. Once the download completes, close ALL open browsers
and programs and install it:

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB974431)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...c-ac76c94d3d0e

Restart if prompted to. Now then go back and see if the system can be
Validated prior to download and *saving* -

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB977074)

You are referring to Windows 7, correct ?
Did you attempt to manually download, *save*, and install the updates I
previously linked you to ?

Did you uninstall the Norton or McAfee free trial that came preinstalled on
the computer and then download/run the appropriate removal tool before you
installed AntiVir?

I don't think I had a Norton or McAfee antivirus... and if I did, I didn't
uninstall them.

Good, so updates are installing despite the name of the Subject you chose.
Please answer this question:
* Are they showing in the list of Installed Updates *
Using the Windows Update applet in Control Panel, click the Installed
Updates link at the bottom of the left frame.

Did you attempt to install the other update I posted the link to also ?

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB977074)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-d65af65482be

Was the system able to be Validated or are we going to keep going back
and forth going over the steps I've previously mentioned ?
