Key questions and clues you did not answer--
How are the laptop and desktop connected to the LAN?
Is one using a wireless connection? (Usually the Laptop)
Have you checked the network settings on both machines? Are they more or
less the same? How about UAC?
Is the user name and password the same?
Is the workgroup the same?
If you are going through a router, (Wired to wireless) it may not work
properly with IPv6, limiting you to IPv4.
Can both machines reach the internet?
