Windows 7 Networking Woes

Having spent several days scouring the internet for answers, I am still no
nearer to a resolve.

I have two Win 7 Ultimate machines (desktop and laptop). If I open Network
on the desktop, I can see both desktop and laptop. If I do the same on the
laptop, it can only see itself. The same is with Homegroup. Desktop can see
laptop but not the other way around. Both units are using MS Security
Essentials and I have switched off the firewall on both but the problem
remains. This also impacts on my ability to use replication in SQL Server
on both units. I can map to shares created on either unit so there is
connectivity of some form.

I am now at wits end as this is making no sense and may even revert back to
good old XP.

Someone please assist me and save my sanity !!

Key questions and clues you did not answer--
How are the laptop and desktop connected to the LAN?
Is one using a wireless connection? (Usually the Laptop)
Have you checked the network settings on both machines? Are they more or
less the same? How about UAC?
Is the user name and password the same?
Is the workgroup the same?
If you are going through a router, (Wired to wireless) it may not work
properly with IPv6, limiting you to IPv4.
Can both machines reach the internet?

Both units connect via WiFi (desktop was hard wired but I changed this
thinking it was the problem)
Both connections same
Username and password the same (apart from the machine name of course)
Workgroup the same
I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless cable router (firmware upgraded to DD_WRT)
Both have full internet access

All the above have been checked following my research on the internet.
