This has happened at least twice, most recently today (1/20/10). When running
Windows Update, it started downloading 4 updates totalling 9.3MB. Download
progess went as expected until it reached around 94% downloaded. Then, it
just seemed to sit there. The update started at 10:30AM. An hour later, the
download had progressed from 94% to 99% (still downloading). A few minutes
later, I went to lunch for about 45 minutes, after which it showed updates
were successful. I have a DSL broadband connection that works very well for
everything else.

Please answer these 3 questions:

1) Which firewall is being used ?
2) What is the installed antivirus/security suite ?

Click the Start orb > in the 'Search programs and files' field, type in
wuauclt
Under Programs, *right* click on wuauclt
Click the Details tab

3) What is it showing for 'Product version' ?
The latest Version is 7.4.7600.226

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

For firewall, I'm using Comodo Firewall 3.13.126709.581
For AV, I'm using MS Security Essentials 1.0.1611.0

To my knowledge, no trial version of McAfee or Norton was on this machine.

Number 1 is the cause of the updating issue as the Windows Update Agent
(WUA) can not be updated with Comodo acting as the firewall.
Checked a little on Comodo's forum and, if I understand this correctly,
the product is actually Comodo Internet Security 3.13.126709.581.
I suggest you uninstall Comodo, reboot, and see if the system can
successfully update the WUA.
Unfortunately, there are *long* threads in Comodo's Firewall forum about
issue when uninstalling it:

Full Removal of Comodo Firewall Pro 3 with SafeSurf Toolbar (If Regular
Uninstall Method Fails)
http://forums.comodo.com/help-for-v3...-t17220.0.html

Use the steps for Vista if you find that uninstalling it leaves "stuff"
behind which may inhibit internet connectivity and the updating of Windows.
IF you want to retain Comodo as the firewall then I suggest you post to
their forum for assistance.

Frankly speaking, the native Windows 7 firewall used in conjunction with
a router that has a hardware firewall (most wireless and wired routers
have a hardware firewall these days) is sufficient protection.
Use a Standard User Account instead of the pseudo-Admin account that's
created when Win 7 initially boots and the system will be even more secure.

Thanks. I'll talk to our admin about Comodo. If this is the *only* problem it
causes, it's not so bad -- as long as the updates ultimately get applied.

Again, thanks for the advice.

You're mowst welcome. To be clear here, if Comodo doesn't allow or
prevents the updating of the Windows Update Agent then the system will
never be able to update. Your network has, or should have, a hardware
based firewall. Using that in conjunction with the native Win7 firewall
will provide sufficient protection in *most* cases.
If this is a major financial institution or E-commerce site, then forget
everything I've said.

I have had a similar problem with MSE and Comodo. My solution was to
disable real-time protection in MSE. All updates went through with no
problems.
