Windows 7 Update deletes stored email

Whenever Windows 7 updates, all of my saved email that has been stored in
storage folders is gone.

Windows Live Mail storage folders still show the From, Subject, and date of
all previously stored messages, but
selecting a message dated before the update results in a window that says
the message can't be found.

1. What's happening?

2. How do I store email so this doesn't happen?

Tom

Hi, again, Tom.

I just responded to your nearly identical message in alt.windows7.general.
There you made the apparently erroneous mistake of saying Outlook Express
storage folders, rather than Windows Live Mail storage folders, greatly
confusing the issue!

But I STILL don't know how Win7 updates can affect WLM storage folders.
Could you please clarify WHICH update(s) you are talking about?

And, when you MUST post the same message to more than one newsgroup, please
Crosspost, rather than Multi-post. That means to put ALL the newsgroup
addresses into the "Newsgroups..." box of a single message, rather than post
each copy individually to a separate newsgroup. That one message will
appear in all the NGs, but all the responses from all the groups will appear
in each group in a single coherent thread. Helpers in one group will see
that there have already been responses in another group and won't duplicate
the same advice. The payoff for you is that you won't have to visit all the
groups to see all the answers, but will see all of them in any one of the
groups.

It is not a WLM Build 15.4.3538.0513 issue (your version) - no updates,
Windows or Microsoft, have been released for your version of WLM.

A more likely culprit to missing messages is 3rd party security software or
user manipulation of the message store folders/messages via Windows
Explorer.

Do you recall seeing a message that Window Live Mail was compacting (upon
exit) ? Was the process completed, failed, or interrupted ?

WLM has never said it's compacting and has never asked to compact.
In fact, I have looked for -compact- and have never found it. Compact in OE
was easy, but it never erased messages.
My WLM is Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3538.0513)
-----------
More data.
I have several storage folders that I created in addition to the original
folders such as 'Family', 'American Legion', '40/8', 'Bank', and
'Woodworking'. I move all messages -to- and -from- me to those folders.
I have recently realized that whenever Windows Update does it's thing, the
messages in the folders I created no longer exist from the time of the
update and earlier, they are just gone.

OE set a registry name value to automatically compact messages
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{identity}\Software\M icrosoft\Outlook
Express\5.0

Name value = Compact Check Count with a default data value of 100

If you wished to force compaction prematurely, the value had to be edited
to 0.

The check box to enable 'Compact messages in the background' was found on:
OE > Tools > Options > ...Maintenance tab

Similar to OE, WLM has the a compact option found on:
WLM Button > Options > Mail > Advanced > Maintenance
- Compact the database on shutdown every 'x' runs

As a test, I 've restored both Win7 32bit and 64bit system multiple times
to different months prior to a Windows/Microsoft update (Aug, Sept, Nov)
and each time created folders with the same names as yours in Storage
folders, copied mail messages to each folder, then ran Windows/Microsoft
update to update each.
- I could not duplicate your problem, imo, something else besides Windows
update is in play.

Are the messages you are copying (copy is recommended over moving) from an
IMAP account ?
