Windows 7 Virtual PC

Hello:

Virtual PC 2007 allowed for copying files onto the desktop of your virtual
PC image. Before, you could drag and drop (copy) files onto the virtual
machine. You could, also, copy files form the virtual machine to your own
laptop where you were running the virtual machine

Just now, I innstalled the Virtual PC for Windows 7. I was not able to copy
files. Has that feature "gone away"? Or, is there a setting that I need to
turn on?

Make sure you have the Integration Features installed. Then you can at least access the files outside the VM via Windows Explorer.

AFAIK, it's gone.

Incidentally, the official name for the Windows 7 virtual PC product is
"Windows Virtual PC" while the official name for the previous virtual PC
product is "Microsoft Virtual PC" (commonly called VPC2004 or VPC2007; I
don't know if there's a commonly used shortcut name for the Win7 vpc
product). The distinction is kind of important because you CAN run VPC2007
under Win7. But you can't have both installed.

There are a number of differences between them. Win7VPC (that's what I'm
going to call it) is much more integrated into Win7 than VPC2007. It
therefore supports more hardware of the host OS (USB and printers, for
example). Unfortunately, some features are lost. You can't drag and drop
files between the host and the guest anymore. The folder has to be seen as a
network folder in one or the other to copy files between them. I find that
to be a BIG loss of functionality. So much so that I continue to use VPC2007
even though I now have Win7 on all my physical computers. Granted, I only
gave Win7VPC a quick look-over. But as soon as I found out you couldn't just
drag and drop files, that did it for me.
