Windows 98 downloads

I am attempting to download the cumulative patches for Windows 98, before
support ceases. For several days, several times a day, I have selected one
or more updates and added them to my basket. I then attempt to download the
items and respond to the licensing question affirmatively. The download
process then fails, stating that I have nothing in my basket. On the right
hand side of my screen, that does appear to be true. Nothing appears on that
side of the screen. However, on the left side of the screen, "Go to download
Basket" shows the number of items. If I go back to that link, I cannot add
items or delete items from the basket, but can again encounter the same
problem of not downloading any files.

The only possible issue that I can think of is that I am trying to download
from my Windows XP system, instead of firing up one of the Windows 98SE (if
they will currently run.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

After additional attempts, I found that a popup blocker was preventing me
from downloading.

After that, however, I still have 18 items that failed to download, even
after repeated attempts.

Any suggestions?

Firewall a Windows 98 box - Sygate will work, although the old Kerio
would be better if the computer has minimal memory. Allow WU to
examine the specimen. Put it behind a NAT router if you can.

I don't know why you're doing this, but it's making me consider getting
it done too, before time runs out. I haven't turned on the DEC in months.
4 sticks totaling 32 megs of unupgradable DEC proprietary ram means
I don't have the Sygate option, but Kerio's installed - if the box boots.

Both of my Windows 98 boxes havelarge chunks of memory. All of my boxses are
firewalled and virus protected. The Windows boxes are mainly used offline
when I'm working with graphics or video on the XP box.

I'm mainly downloading all of the updates, while they are still available.
Worst case scenario of rebuilding the boxes from the ground up, which is
probable with Windows 98.

I'm really attempting to figure out why I can't download the last 18 updates.

Thanks!

Out of curiosity, I went to the catalogue and tried to get a couple 98se
updates with my XP sp2 computer. I got "Failed to download" messages.
It did its directory tree organization but only placed the ReadMore for each
of the two updates the update's folder - not the update.

Getting anything 98 from WUcat looks like it's not worth the effort.
There are downloads available at www.microsoft.com/downloads

Me too! <w> Yikes! 169 items?

For certain downloads? I got the first one but didn't try any others.

Any clues in %windir%\Windows Update.log or iuhist.xml ?
(The download occurs using WUv4.)

In fact, I have no iuhist.xml but I do have this:

<example>
%ProgramFiles%\WindowsUpdate\V4\iuhist_catalogAdmi n.xml
</example>

Who knew? Notepad can't read it but IE can. ; )

Everything worked for the one I tried.

No kidding. 169 items would be painful that way.

Using IE7b2 ICIM.

FWIW

Hello, Mr. Aldwinckle, and thanks for commenting. Code 2146762748
may simply mean that WU (rightly) thinks that I'm not a corporation.
Yes, IE will display XML code - even non-beta IE6 will do that.

Microsoft Search found 2146762748 in
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/shared/js/top.js
var WIN32_SUBJECT_NOT_TRUSTED = -2146762748; var ERROR_E_FAIL = 0x80004005; var Error_XmlDom_Reason1 = -2147746132; var
Error_XmlDom_Reason2 = -2148139437;

If Microsoft doesn't trust me, that's OK - I don't trust Microsoft.
If I want an adventure, I'll plug in the 32 meg DEC and see what happens.
It's legit 98se, and used to update swiftly when connected to WU.

I'd need to do that before cutting loose from civilization for the summer
on a tenting trip like the ones in 04 and 05. Not quite electronics-free.
I thought about putting in power for the laptop, but cell phone only's OK.

Is that signed? Calc is showing me that -2146762748
is 0x800B0004 which is a trust code.

http://docxp.mvps.org/WU5-ERR.htm
<extract>
0x800B0004 -2146762748 TRUST E SUBJECT NOT TRUSTED The subject is not trusted for the specified action.

</extract>

(MSN Search for
0x800B0004 microsoft codes
)

Cool. That might even be a script which I was hoping
to get some help with tracing last year. (See below.)

I doubt that it's anything like that. More like something's broken
and this is the (bogus) code and message that is being fed back
to reflect that symptom. I had a related symptom last year which
I foolishly tried to get Support to help me with. All that was wrong
is that I kept getting the "Administrators only" page when I tried
to use the Windows Update Catalog. I was looking for help
diagnosing what their scripts were doing wrong to make
that erroneous determination. What I got instead was no diagnosis
whatsoever but instead increasingly bigger sledge hammers to
attempt to "repair" the *undiagnosed* symptom. Eventually the
sledge hammers caused my system to become unbootable.
Naturally when I rebuilt it the problem symptom was gone.
This was deemed a success! Incredible! I have since characterized
the experience as: "Oh, you have a stuck door? Please demolish
and rebuild your house; that will fix your stuck door." Insanity!

A locked door taking too long to unlock. If the house rebuilding is a
five hour job but the door, which has already taken days, needs a
two minute unknown (unlooked for) action, the rebuild disappears the
damage done by the sledge hammers and what have you. No dumpster
required for the rubble either - frozen smoke stirred by wind disperses.
If there's been adequate provision for the eventuality, the house rebuild
takes only a few effortless minutes but diagnosis requires mental strain.
Prepend http:// to the javascript to download it for examination:
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/shared/js/top.js

Back in the 90's support attempted to help me with an MS-DOS problem.
An educational long distance bill instructed me not to waste time and money.

I still haven't plugged in the DEC. WUcat used to accept it - trusted.

In my case there wasn't.

My passion. ; )

Already done last night.

In my case we were communicating strictly by E-mail.
It wasn't costing me a thing and I didn't care how long it took.
I was just hoping for hints which would direct my own diagnosis
which was already well underway before I requested assistance.
By causing me to have to rebuild my partition the "solution"
lost me all opportunity of ever being able to figure out the real
cause of the problem. I suspect such information might have been
invaluable in my being able to help more in your case too;
so the loss can be regarded now as compounding. ; )
