windows 98 - explorer problem

I am running windows 98. when i boot up the system my wallpaper apprears and
that is it. then i get a message that states:
Explorer
this program has performed an illegal opeation.

when i click on details: it states EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:00430b99
Registers:
then a bunch of codes are listed (if need i will write them down)

I tried to re-install Windows 98 with the CD Rom but I am having no luck.
Anyone out there that can help. Just have material on my desk top that I
need to retrieve.

I am sorry that you are hitting this issue. This does not seem like a
Windows Update problem. Perhaps these other newsgroups would be more
helpful:
