We have an Internetcafe with 400 PCs running Windows 98. When we download MSN
live messenger from msn.com, version 7.0 is downloaded and installed. When we
try to sign in, a forced upgrade is required, clicking "no" just redisplays
the upgrade box. Clicking yes, starts a download which won't install and a
message "error, please visit MSN.COM to download newest version" is
displayed. The version which is downloaded from MSN.COM is again version 7.0
and the whole roundabout starts again....

What are Win98 users supposed to do? We can't windows on upgrade 400 PCs!!!!

Maybe some security software running on your computers/server is preventing
the install (lack of installing priviledges). The correct version of MSN
Messenger for Win98 is MSN Messenger 7.0.0820 which can be downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-9505f47bed45
(you may want to put this on a disk or other portable device so you don't
have to download more than once)

Uninstalling the current version on the computers might be a good idea too,
just to make sure the correct version is installed (and stays installed).

Greetings,

If you really have 400 machines, you should really consider some way of deploying
applications throughout the network as Internet applications constantly require updates.

We download MSN messenger everytime from exactly this link (there is no MSN
installed by default). The version that is installed 7.0.0820, then
immediately wants to upgrade to 8.1, no choice to answer no!!!. This then
fails because of compatibility reasons. There is no security software
preventing installation. Up until last week MSN installed with no problems

We have no software installed on the PCs, MSN has to be downloaded everytime.
Version 7.0.0820installs ok , then immediately wants to upgrade to 8.1, no
choice to answer no!!!. This then fails because of compatibility reasons.
There is no security software preventing installation. Up until last week MSN
installed with no problems

Come on, the post is about Microsoft carrying on a FORCED UPDATE, one which
users can't prevent. The post is not about finding an alternative to MSN!

Best,
k.

IE version 6 is installed.

There is no default IM application installed.

MSN Version 7 installs ok, but when the programme is executed, the forced
upgrade message is displayed with options "yes" and "no". If we select "no"
then the message is just redisplayed. If we answer "yes", then we get an
installation error for MSN version 8. The upgrade box can't be cancelled, it
just reappears.

We have rembo software which reimages the machines after each user session.
This image is administered from HQ in London and can't be changed everytime
upgrades for software are released, hence the absence of pre-installed IM
software.
