Windows 98 No Updates Were Installed

I just installed Windows 98 SE on my mother's laptop with help from the Win
98 community newsgroup, which I greatly appreciated, but there is still a
lingering problem on her computer. No updates will install before and after
the update. The files do not download, and I get a "No Updates Were
Installed" page which lists all the updates it failed to download in red
(Eight are critical). The log file contains the following error for each
item:

Install couldn't get Item ........... Download Path (Error 0x80004005:
Unspecified error)

I tried updating only one with the same results. My mother has to leave
soon, and I hope to get updates installing before she leaves. Thanks.

This might help clarify the problem. The following is the content of my

"Error: 0x8004005" or "Error: 0x800C0005" error messages when you scan for
updates:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=843499

Did you reboot the machine (1) after (re)installing/upgrading to Win98SE
and/or (2) after installing 896688?

PS: To assure a clean install of anything, including Windows Updates, your
anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running processes
closed before beginning the install. This is especially recommended in
Win9x.

I had actually already performed the steps suggested in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=843499
with no success. The message "No Updates Were Installed" appears after the
download seems to fail with no error message. The error 0x8004005 is in the
log file.

I did restart the computer after upgrading to Win98SE. I don't believe
896688 applies.

I have since helped my mother install most of the updates listed by
downloading them directly from the Windows Update Catalog and then executing
them. It is slow and tedious, but it works. Installing using Windows
Updates should work just as well.

I actually installed the original Windows 98 SE updates eccentially this way.
I copied the Update CD to the hard drive and installed it in the safe mode.
It wouldn't install directly from the CD. The updates from the Windows
Update site just don't download. As I mentioned in the reply to your other
message, I am able to download and install directly from the Windows Update
Catalog for the most part.

You must reboot after installing 896688, too.

More later.

What Windows version had been installed before that?

Can you point us to your thread in Win98 General (I assume) newsgroup, Jim?

> ...It wouldn't install directly from the [Security Update CD]

Tell us more about this. It may be related to your Windows Update problem.

When you take the machine to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, does the
URL (address) resolve to one that includes "V4" in it?

Are you getting '0x8004005' errors or '0x80004005' errors, Jim?

I just wasn't sure 896688 had been installed. Checked & I had rebooted.
